RESEARCH CENTER FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OF THE ARTS
Goldsmithery is one of the arts but at the same time one of the economic sectors that is most closely rooted in the peoples of the North of Portugal. Possessing a millenary tradition, as continuously demonstrated by archaeological finds, this art has bequeathed to us a set of pieces, techniques, traditions, uses and customs, including some of an intangible nature, that must be safeguarded, particularly at a time when a number of realities linked to these areas is in grave danger of being lost.

In the context of the commemorations of the centenary of the birth of the composer and organist Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992), a cycle of concerts was organised presenting the composer’s complete works for organ. Care was taken to make these concerts as accessible as possible to the general public by broadcasting the concert on a large screen, having the organists themselves introducing the works played and projecting the texts that inspired some of these works.
As a result of the musicological investigation works carried out by the line of action, this cycle of concerts was organised, in which part of the programme includes listening to some of the works transcribed.
The challenge of reconstructing a polychrome wood statue, which the restorers decides was an intervention for conservation purposes, opened up an artistic/scientific area of work in the field of the restoration of art objects.
This project unfolded in a series of stages in a multidisciplinary context. A process of chromatic restoration and geometric restoration was developed. The work concluded with the development of an interactive 3D representation system with an augmented reality process.
The SoundDataMining project developed the technology for the intelligent analysis of information and presentation of results (sonification and visualization techniques). The technology developed was applied to a case study in the area of air quality monitoring. The forecast of the air quality index was developed at one day’s distance (sulphur, ozone, particles and nitrogen). This forecast is made available to end users via mobile telephones.
‘Building Bridges to the Community’ aimed to create and offer professional development opportunities in the media, multimedia and graphic design areas, with a European dimension. Assuming the need to actively involve adult students and other with reduced access in this domain, the network promoted effective support for the process. The specificity of the network is that it consists of small-scale educational institutions in small countries with impact in its regions.
