Abstract:

This project is centered around multiphonics and upper bi-tones on the classical guitar. It aims at investigating, by using different microphones/positions and guitarists/guitars, the palette of sonorities they offer when amplified. Amplification is believed to introduce novelty by making these low-level sounds, or some of their components, audible to an audience. New pieces for/with guitar will be composed by the author and by invited composers as part of the strategy of implementation of the results, which will be tested in a public concert.

Objectives:

Scarcely researched up to now, few composers have used multiphonics and upper bi-tones in pieces for classical guitar, and those who have done so have not explored the amplification of the sounds. It is our goal to provide composers with relevant information on the sounds and thus contribute to its establishing as common vocabulary in the writing for guitar, especially for amplified guitar. The scientific results will be thus conveyed in language suited to the artistic community. This will hopefully entice composers to write for the instrument, and also serve as a practical reference for guitarists.
